1774...Not to be outdone by Boston, New Yorkers stage their own tea party, dumping cases of tea into New York Harbor.

1964...The New York World's Fair opens in Flushing Meadows, Queens. Over the next two years, 51 million people will visit the $1 billion festival, which ends up running a deficit of $21 million.
