A correction officer was brutally attacked at Rikers Island over the weekend.

The union is blaming the mayor.

The Correction Officers' Benevolent Association (COBA) says J'von Johnson threw scalding hot water on the officer and repeatedly punched him Saturday night.

He suffered first and third degree burns, and a broken jaw.

This marks the fourth violent assault on a correction officer in six weeks.

The union cites the mayor's decision to do away with solitary confinement for inmates 21 and under.

"What did the union say to the Mayor before he eliminated punitive segregation?" said COBA President Alias Husamudeen. "We said don't do it. Don't do it because it's going to make the violence go up, he did it anyway."

A Department of Correction spokesperson said Johnson will face charges for this attack, and that he was immediately placed into more restrictive custody.
