A construction worker was charged with stealing computers from a Rockaway Beach school during Hurricane Sandy cleanup.

Police say Kevin Smith, 43, was arrested Tuesday morning and charged with burglary and possession of stolen property.

Investigators say he stole two laptop computers from the Scholars Academy when Sandy clean up was being done back in December.

The Academy's principal says Sandy didn't damage the school's surveillance system, and it helped police in their investigation.

"The school has a state-of-the-art video camera system," Principal Brian O'Connell said. "There isn't an exit on the building that isn't covered, there isn't a corner that's not covered. There isn't a blind spot in the building."

The Education Department says Smith is an employee of Iannelli Construction.

The company could not be reached for comment.

There's also still an open investigation involving additional looting at the Academy in the weeks following Sandy.

The school says about $100,000 worth of equipment disappeared, including at least six computers and about 90 iPads.
