Business owners were trying to pick up the pieces after a suspicious four-alarm fire ripped through several stores in the East Elmhurst section of Queens on Monday.

The fire gutted at least four businesses and a church along Northern Boulevard.

One of the affected owners told NY1 the fire may have started in a sign-making company and spread to the adjacent businesses, including an environmental company that specialized in asbestos removal and mold abatement.

Investigators said the stores were unoccupied at the time.
