The Brooklyn Developmental Disabilities Council hosted "Heroes Among Us" at the Brooklyn Borough Hall courtroom Friday, an event that celebrated the staff who protected developmentally disabled kids and adults before, during and after Hurricane Sandy.

"The fact that they recognize our hard work as a team, it's so special to me that we're not forgotten," said Mesha Best, an award recipient. "No matter how much times we work, every single day, they recognize our hard work, and we are honored by it. And I appreciate that."

Dozens of residences with disabled people were evacuated during the storm, keeping some of the staff members on the job 24 hours a day after the storm.
