Dozens of children from across the city gathered in the Rockaways Monday to bring some cheer to other kids hit hard by Hurricane Sandy.

The Police Athletic League hosted its third annual Martin Luther King Jr. Service Day at Goldie Maple Academy.

The school off of Beach 57th Street was damaged by the hurricane, and many of the students are storm victims.

Kids worked on team-building activities and watched a movie about Dr. King.

Organizers said the event aims to exemplify the late leader's message of service and unity.

"The message today is there is hope for tomorrow," said Jill Moore, director of the PAL Center at Golden Maple Academy. "What is given to you, you should always manage to give back."

A storm-preparedness workshop was also part of the activities.
