For people in the Rockaways, the new year brings new hopes and new challenges as they continue to work toward rebuilding.

It's been more than two months since Hurricane Sandy struck, and the recovery effort continues in the Rockaways.

People NY1 spoke to said for the residents and business owners in the area, new year's resolutions are a little different this year.

"A lot of people's resolution out here would be to restore," said one resident.

"Well, I'm hoping for the new year is that the people that lost they houses, that they have somewhere to live and stay with they family members," said another.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency continues to offer help to those affected by Hurricane Sandy.

While their Disaster Recovery Centers were closed New Year's Day, they resume normal hours on Wednesday.
