Some New Yorkers living in city public housing buildings will start seeing rent credits in their January bill.
The New York City Housing Authority said it will provide $5.6 million in rent abatements for approximately 35,000 families affected by Hurricane Sandy.
The amount of the credits will vary, depending on how much residents pay in monthly rent and how long they were without power, heat, hot water and the use of elevators.
About 400 buildings lost those services because of the storm, in some cases taking weeks to restore.
Officials said if residents feel the amount of their credit is incorrect, they should bring it to the attention of their property manager.
