Friends say 26-year-old Ishak Ghali worked 12 hours a day, seven days a week at the deli where police say he was shot and killed.
"We never do anything illegal," said Mena Abdel-Malik, Ghali's cousin. "But what's strange about this country, who goes like this, straight, he gets shot."
Police say he was found dead with a gunshot to his head around 6 p.m. Thursday at a deli off of Linden Street in Ridgewood. Family members rushed to the scene.
"He passed away from the first shot," Abdel-Malik said. "It was in the head, man. He got shot in the head."
Ghali moved to the states seven years ago from Egypt. The outpouring of support from the Egyptian community was evident Thursday. Dozens were outside the store, crying and leaning on each other.
"The church community is really one big family," said Rev. Michael Sorial of St. Mary and St. Antonio's Coptic Orthodox Church. "Just as an act of support and love from the community, everyone's come together. Certainly, people are afraid because they never expected something like this would happen here."
Friends say Ghali lived inside the same building as the deli. NY1 is told that the Bodega Workers' Association will help pay to fly his body to Egypt for the burial.
