The new grassroots group, Friends of the Rockaways, continued to donate food and supplies to the Chapel of Praise Church in Far Rockaway Monday.
The church was flooded during the storm.
The group has already begun raising funds to refurbish it.
The group had set their sights on Christmas and are collecting toys for the church to distribute.
"We really wanted to feel like we were helping somebody and not just dropping off stuff,” said Justine Reichman, who started Friends of the Rockaways. “And we had no idea where it was going. So, when we came here and we met the people and we knew exactly what they needed we felt like we could actually do something."
"It's so exciting that we have people who can take that burden off the parents to look for whatever they can do to make Christmas such a spectacular time in the lives of our children," Reverend Toyin Akinbola said.
