New York Cares is starting its annual coat drive early this year.
The nonprofit said it's launching the event two weeks ahead of schedule to make sure those without power will stay warm as temperatures drop.
1,500 coats were distributed to Far Rockaway residents Tuesday.
Many waited in line for hours but said they were grateful.
"It's a blessing from God that I have these coats for my grandchildren, and God is good," said Rosemary Shepherd, who received a coat.
"A winter coat is so critical, especially in the colder weather," said Gary Bagley, the executive director of New York Cares. "But now, while some residents still don't have electricity or heat, this coat may be something that they actually need indoors."
New York Cares hopes to collect 50,000 coats by Thanksgiving.
