Ann Pettway, 51, also was sentenced to three years' supervised release.

She pleaded guilty to a kidnapping charge in February.

During a court appearance, Pettway said in 1987 she had taken a train from her Connecticut home to Harlem Hospital, abducted 19-day-old Carlina White and then raised the girl as her own daughter.

White became suspicious of her parentage at age 16, when Pettway was unable to produce a birth certificate.

At the sentencing, Pettway did not appear to emotionally react but she previously gave an apology.

"It came from her heart. This has been troubling her for a long time since she got arrested and she just wanted to have an opportunity to say how deeply sorry she really is," said defense attorney Robert Baum.

"I'm not really satisfied with the sentence because I figure Ann Pettway should have received 23 years in jail because Ann took 23 from me," said Carl Tyson, White's biological father.

Baum argued that Pettway had post-traumatic stress disorder from several stillbirths and miscarriages, which led her to kidnap White.
