A day of fun in the sun is what most people expect when they visit the beach but for those going to Rockaway Beach in Queens, you might also find needles and empty beer bottles.

NY1 found multiple syringes lying across the sand at Beach 116th Street.

Rockaway Beach is one of the city's most popular summer destinations and attracts families with young children.

Parents we spoke with say they're concerned.

"I think it's disgusting," said one parent. "Our kids are little and they could pick it up not knowing what it is. I haven't heard about this in years."

"I think it's a disgrace, a disaster," said another. "I had no idea. This is news to me. I remember this years ago. As a child, this went on but I haven't heard of anything since."

The Parks Department is aware of the situation and is asking the public to call 311 if they see any hazardous litter at the beach or tell a lifeguard or a parks department employee.
