They've sold about a half a million pounds of wet ice and a quarter million pounds of dry ice since Wednesday. On Friday the orders just kept coming in.

The phone was ringing off the hook at the Natuzzi Bros Ice manufacturing and distribution company, where staffers worked around the clock to keep up with the demand.

"The ice flying out the door, literally," said John Natuzzi, the vice president of Natuzzi Bros. "Just re-stocking people all day. Fielding 5 to 700 calls a day in the last 2-3 days. It's been pretty exhausting."

The team worked up a sweat by making, packaging, stacking, loading and delivering ice to some of its corporate customers.

"At the production facility, that freezer is completely sold out," Natuzzi said. "So that's why we're at the storage facility to show you that. We're now running out of this supply."

While big businesses cleared out much of the inventory, there was great demand from local merchants who couldn't keep up with their customers need to cool down.

A Dunkin' Donuts franchise owner was forced to make an emergency trip to Natuzzi after nearly running out of ice. He says he was fully stocked earlier in the day.

Quite a few residents also needed help.

Then, there were the emergency phone calls. One came in at 6 a.m. from Con Edison. The company had already bought about 60,000 pounds of ice.

"I just got in the car and made sure I was here on time to finish loading the trucks that I didn't finish from the night before," Natuzzi said. "I had to get 'em out and make sure they make the deliveries in a timely fashion."

When you're working this hard, at least it's good to be inside one of the borough's coolest businesses.
