The utility reduced voltage in dozens of neighborhoods in Queens and Brooklyn as a precaution to protect equipment and maintain service while crews fix electrical problems.

Con Ed is also asking its customers to turn off non-essential electrical equipment and to keep their thermostat no lower than 78 degrees.

Residents who lost power were not happy.

"We was in our house and all the lights went off, so we checked our neighbors houses and all their lights was off," said one resident.

"I am concerned because, I mean, in times of heat waves like this, everybody suffer from a lot of heat," said another resident. "We do have elderly people, sick people, you know, people in elevators."

Hundreds of cooling centers will be open again Thursday throughout the city after record-high temperatures were recorded Wednesday at all three area airports.

Health experts stress drinking water is the most important way to beat the heat, particularly for those prone to dehydration.

Meanwhile, some people were finding fun ways to beat the heat.

Whether it was having a water balloon fight, running through hydrants or just enjoying an Italian ice, New Yorkers we spoke with were looking to make the best of the situation.

"Made sure to get a lot of water," said one resident. "Keep cool."
