The 22nd annual Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival preparations are under way in Queens.
Teams on Sunday were learning steering and paddling techniques in Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
Some of the best dragon boat racing coaches were on hand to help contestants perfect their technique.
"So what happens is you get 20 paddlers in a boat, you get a drummer, and a steers person. The whole thing weighs about two tons and you got to move that thing 500 meters down a water course," said Dragon Boat Coach Konrad Doerrbecker.
More than 170 teams and some 2,000 athletes from around the world are competing in what's considered the largest festival of its kind in the U.S.
The free event is scheduled for the weekend of August 4.
