Ace left-hander Johan Santana needed 134 pitches to complete the first no-hitter in the team's 51-year history Friday as the Mets topped the St. Louis Cardinals 8-0.

Santana walked five and struck out eight. He struck out 2011 World Series MVP David Freese to end the game.

"I just had to get him out," Santana said. "I don't think I've thrown a no-hitter in video games. This is the first time I had the opportunity. Coming into this game, I had no clue, no sense that I would throw a no-hitter. It's very special."

He got help from his defense in the seventh inning when left fielder Mike Baxter made a running catch on a Yadier Molina fly ball before slamming into the left field wall.

"It's an honor to be able to make a play for Johan," Baxter said. "But ultimately, it's his night. He was incredible tonight. Start to finish, he really had it all working. What a great night for him and the Mets."

Santana's no-hitter overshadowed former Met Carlos Beltran's return to Citi Field for the first time since he was traded last July.

Beltran was at the center of a controversial play in the sixth inning when a line drive he hit was called foul. Replays appeared to show that the ball landed on the line behind third base and the ball should have been called fair.

The only Mets pitcher to take a no-hitter into the ninth inning before Friday was Tom Seaver, who did it three times.
