Thousands of parishioners packed St. Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown to see Cardinal Timothy Dolan celebrate his first Easter Sunday Mass since his elevation and to mark the holiest day on the Christian calendar.
Christian considered Easter to be the day Jesus Christ rose from the dead after his crucifixion.
In his homily, Dolan focused on the importance of Jesus' teachings on his life and to all Catholics.
The cardinal also acknowledged the diversity of his congregation, and joked about how it was eclipsed by the turnout for New York Jets quarterback Tim Tebow's outdoor Easter service in Texas.
"We are delighted you are here. You'd think I'd be so happy that we got over 3,000 people at St. Patrick's Cathedral, you'd think one Timothy Dolan would be happy. But I'm jealous because one Timothy Tebow has 25,000 in Texas," said Dolan.
Easter marks the end of Holy Week, and the beginning of the 50-day Easter season.
