The United States Postal Service is holding off on plans to close 3,500 facilities across the country, including 34 in New York City.

The moratorium was announced Tuesday as part of a deal with the Senate.

No post offices or mail sorting facilities will be closed until at least May 15, giving Congress more time to come up with a cost-cutting plan.

"When it’s all said and done, this is a challenge to Congress: put up or shut up. If you don't like what the postal service has put forward, in terms of closing processing facilities and post offices and eliminating jobs, come up with a better approach," said Illinois Senator Richard Durbin.

Some 270 mail processing facilities, including three in the city, were also targeted.

Overnight delivery could also be eliminated.

Mail volume has decreased by more than 25 billion pieces over the last decade.

Roosevelt Island Post Office Spared

On the same day the moratorium was announced, USPS also reversed its controversial decision to close the Roosevelt Island post office.

That means even after the moratorium is lifted, the island's lone post office will remain open.

The decision to remove it from the list of possible closures came after protests from local leaders and elected officials.

At an August rally, they argued that with Roosevelt Island's large number of seniors and disabled residents, having a post office is essential.

Dozens of other city branches are still being considered for closure or consolidation.
