A Queens man has been arrested on charges of burning his girlfriend's baby.

Anthony Parra, 20, was charged today with second-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child. He is set to be arraigned later tonight.

Sources say Parra told them he was watching the infant girl and her two-year-old sister at his home on 73rd Street in Jackson Heights while their mother was at work yesterday.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown said Parra left the girl in a running shower because she was crying and then turned up the temperature twice.

Brown also said Parra took hotter water from the kitchen sink and poured it on the 11-month-old.

Parra allegedly put cream and alcohol on the baby's burns before taking her to New York Hospital Queens.

The little girl is said to have suffered severe burns to more than 30 percent of her body. She is now said to be in critical condition and on a ventilator.

Doctors notified police because of inconsistencies between Parra's claims and her injuries.

Sources say the child is also being examined to see if she was sexually assaulted, as there was damage to her genital area. If she was, the charges against Parra, who his landlady says is a gardener, could be upgraded.

Neighbors say they never saw the baby before, but did notice a young woman, thought to be Parra's girlfriend. They also say Parra kept to himself since moving in a couple of months ago.

“I said hi once, he never said hi back,” said one neighbor. “You know, what can I say? Just left him alone.”

“This is the first time anything like this has happened in this neighborhood. So I'm a little surprised,” said another.

Sources say the mother lives in Fishkill, N.Y. Parra is not the girl's biological father.
