Delta and JetBlue airlines are asking to be exempt from the new government rule that limits the time passengers can be held in planes sitting on the runway.

The airlines are the biggest operators at John F. Kennedy Airport, and airline officials say the delays caused by the closure of the airport's main runway could cost them millions of dollars.

The new Department of Transportation rule orders airlines to let passengers off planes that are delayed for three hours or more or face fines of up to $27,500 per passenger.

The new rule goes into effect April 29th. However, Bay Runway is closed for four months to be repaved.

While the airlines have already cut their schedules to help ease delays, they fear the situation could get worse.
