New York State Attorney General Andrew Cuomo is going after a major city landlord for alleged tenant harassment.
Cuomo says he plans to sue Vantage Properties for illegally pressuring rent-regulated tenants out of their homes so the company could raise rents on new tenants. He claims Vantage tries to evict tenants by refusing to cash their rent checks, and then filing legal claims for non-payment.
Cuomo says Vantage owns more than 125 building and almost 10,000 rent-regulated apartments throughout Queens, Harlem and Upper Manhattan.
A spokesman for the company says, "Vantage is genuinely committed to serving its residents and to the future of affordable housing in New York City. We look forward to demonstrating this to the Attorney General."
