Passengers were evacuated from a terminal at John F. Kennedy International Airport after a security breach Saturday afternoon.
A Port Authority spokesman said a person who was on a flight from Orlando, Fla. walked through a door that was supposed to only be used by employees and set off an alarm in Terminal 8 around 3:30 p.m.
Travelers in the terminal and on three boarded planes on the tarmac were asked to evacuate.
By 6 p.m., the terminal was reopened and the passengers began a long re-screening process.
Terminal 8 handles both domestic and international flights for American Airlines, and an AA spokesman said some flights were delayed.
"Well, it happens. I just hope that somebody gets caught and put him in prison for doing this kind of stuff," said one awaiting passenger.
"It's really frustrating, especially because our plane was fully boarded before the time that the breach supposedly occurred, so it seems possible that our plane would have been implicated by the breach," said another. "So I don't see why we were part of the group that had to be re-screened. But I guess that's the way it goes."
As of 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Port Authority officials said the trespassing individual had left the terminal, but that the incident was caught on surveillance video.
Last week, a male Chinese graduate student was charged with breaching security at Newark Liberty Airport earlier this month.
The breach in Newark caused massive delays after federal officials shut down the terminal for six hours while passengers were re-screened.
