Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Police Commissioner Ray Kelly attended the official groundbreaking Wednesday for the city's new police academy in College Point, Queens.
The first phase of the project, which includes academic buildings, classrooms and tactical gyms, will cost about $750 million.
Mayor Michael Bloomberg said a new police academy was decades in the making.
"The current academy built in 1964 is seriously overcrowded and outdated," he said.
The current training center is on a residential block on Manhattan's East Side.
The new academy will sit on 30 acres and will be able to train 2,000 recruits at any one time.
The mayor said the project will be complete by 2013.
