"Everybody's Fine" recently premiered at the Loews Theater on 68th Street and Broadway. The film stars Robert De Niro as a father trying to bring the family together for the holidays.
George Whipple: [It's] based on an Italian film. Great love among Italian families. You think that translates to an American family?
Robert De Niro: The movie, the original, was different than this. It's like a generation earlier, practically. And it doesn't have to apply to Italians, it could be any family anywhere."
One of his daughters is portrayed by Drew Barrymore.
"I wanted to be intimate and tactile like a real father and daughter could be and so we spent a lot of time together," said Barrymore. "We went to lunches on-set, we would just talk and I was always sort of grabbing him and I wanted to show how much this daughter loved this father. And it was very easy for me to display that because I love him so much."
Sam Rockwell plays De Niro's big screen son.
Whipple: So, let's talk a little bit about this role. What attracted you to it?
Rockwell: Well, Robert De Niro, that's pretty much it.
The evening was a benefit for the Tribeca Film Institute, which is an outgrowth of the two-week Tribeca Film Festival.
"The Tribeca Film Institute is our year-round programming initiative for education and artist support," said Jane Rosenthal of the institute.
What do the stars think of Daddy De Niro?
"You know if you ingratiate yourself with him, he will absolutely sit, hangout, talk. He's so open-hearted and minded," said Barrymore.
"You know, I don't think there is any young actor who wouldn't like to be Bob's kid. You know what I mean? He's a great guy," said Rockwell.
"I wouldn't mind [if De Niro were my father]. There's a spot available," said actor Kate Beckinsale.
De Niro had other things in mind.
Whipple: How would you like these three kids as your real kids?
De Niro: Ah, I have enough trouble with my own.
Make sure you bring the tissues to this flick.
