NY1's weekly segment "Your Weekend Starts Now" shows entertaining picks for great things to do this weekend all around the city. NY1's Arts reporter Stephanie Simon filed the following report.

Black History Month at the Apollo Theater

First up, the famed Apollo Theater celebrates Black History month all weekend long with a free open house this weekend and a free concert and sing-a-long Friday night with "Take 6." To see this 10-time Grammy Award-winning Christian jazz vocal group, you must RSVP online or at the box office. There is a limit of four tickets per person or 12 per organization.

Ben Allison at Carnegie Hall

Also on Friday night, hear the ever-adventurous Ben Allison and his band play the Late Night series at Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall. Showtime is at 10 p.m. and tickets are $40-$50. Early birds who are 21 and older take note, the first 200 attendees can get a complimentary drink, starting at 9 p.m.

Theo Bleckmann at Cornelia Street Cafe

Grammy-nominated composer/vocalist Theo Bleckmann created the alien language for the movie "Men In Black." His Friday performance with guitarist Ben Monder should also be "out of this world," when they bring their art-jazz sound to the Cornelia Street Cafe. Showtimes are at 9 and 10:30 p.m. and there is a $15 cover and $10 minimum.

Young Ballroom Dancers at Avery Fisher

Saturday, see the moves that made the film "Mad Hot Ballroom" such a huge hit. This weekend, the Little Orchestra Society presents "West Side Story And Other Music Of The Americas." The orchestra provides the music while the Dancing Classrooms Youth Dance Company does its thing. The family-oriented performance takes place at Avery Fisher Hall. Showtimes are at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. and tickets range from $15 to $50.

Also on Saturday, get ready for V-Day with a Victorian Valentine Workshop at the Bartow-Pell Mansion Museum. From 1 to 3 p.m., learn about the history of the holiday while making your own card. The cost is $5 and Registration is required.

Dance New Amsterdam presents LateNite

Saturday night, Dance New Amsterdam presents LateNite, for artists combing dance, performance art and experimental theater, such as the A.O. Movement Collective. Showtime is at 9:30 p.m. and tickets are $10.
