The city will continue its extra trash pick ups in areas hard hit by Hurricane Sandy to accommodate those still cleaning out damaged property.
The Department of Sanitation is extending it special collections in parts of Staten Island, Queens and Brooklyn through February 18.
Officials say homeowners are starting to ramp up their rebuilding efforts now that their FEMA checks are coming in the mail.
"Over the past couple of weeks we've see an enormous amount of material come out. And this week has been one of the highest in terms of material coming out that I've seen in quite a while," said Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty.
Crews have picked up nearly 400 tons of garbage and debris so far.
