As Democratic congressional candidate Grace Meng picked up the endorsement of former Mayor Ed Koch at City Hall on Monday, she spoke publicly for the first time about her father's arrest on wire fraud charges.

The assemblywoman hopes to replace retiring Congressman Gary Ackerman in the newly drawn 6th Congressional District, which includes parts of Queens.

Grace Meng previously issued a brief statement after her father, former assemblyman Jimmy Meng, was arrested last month and charged with taking a bribe to fix a criminal case.

His daughter, who now holds his seat in the Assembly, says his arrest does not change the race.

"No, I don't believe it'll effect the outcome of the election. I love my dad very much, and we are praying for his case, but we are continuing to do what we've been doing," the assemblywoman said. "And if anything, I think the voters of Queens and neighbors of Queens have shown even more of an outpouring of support."

Grace Meng won a four-way Democratic primary in June and faces Republican City Councilman Dan Halloran for the seat. ClientIP:,, UserAgent: CCBot/2.0 ( Profile: TWCSAMLSP
