Nearly 900 New Yorkers came to the Williamsburg Bank Building in Fort Greene to attend Edible Manhattan's annual wine tasting, known as Uncorked.

This year, bottles came from a whopping three dozen wineries.

Some of the wines came from wine regions upstate, but most are from Long Island's fertile east end just 70 miles east.

"Long Island is a unique area, and it's got a very unique micro-climate because of the way it sticks out into the Atlantic Ocean. It's ideal," said Ronald Goerler, the president of the Long Island Wine Council.

Goerler's family also owns Jamesport Vineyards, which has been making wines on the North Fork for 30 years, where grapes are getting increased critical acclaim as the industry matures.

"I'm a second generation farmer [and] wine grower and it's gonna take those generations. My son or my daughters, as they come through, that's what builds the reputation because the quality improves, the understanding of the vineyard and the soil improves," he said.

As the reputation of the region has grown, so have the number of wineries on the Island.

"My father, when he started this, it was very small, there were only four producers. Now there's 50 producers out here. It's amazing to see the camaraderie and the fact that we're in Brooklyn with a thousand people here today. It's exciting," Goerler said.

What's even more exciting is that some of the wines poured at Uncorked were made right here in New York City, which boasts four true wineries.

"I have a winery that's based here in Brooklyn with my tasting room in Williamsburg. I produce wines out of grapes grown all over New York State and I feature Brooklyn artists on all the labels of the wines," said Alie Shaper, the owner of Brooklyn Oenology.
