1857...Nineteenth-century gang warfare erupts in the Five Points neighborhood on Manhattan's Lower East Side. For the next two days, the Bowery Boys battle the Dead Rabbits. The militia and the police try to stop the riots, but by the time it's over, eight people are killed and more than 100 are injured.

1998...Famed quarterback and Brooklyn native Sid Luckman dies at age 81.
