1931...Aviators Wiley Post and Harold Gatty take off from the Big Apple for the first round-the-world flight in a single engine plane.

strong>1936...A new force of Transit Police starts patrolling the city's subways. The force is eventually merged into the NYPD in 1995.

1992..."Dapper Don" John Gotti is sentenced to life in prison for murder and racketeering. He dies in jail of throat cancer ten years later.

1997...Dr. Betty Shabazz, the window of former Nation of Islam leader Malcolm X, dies from burns suffered in a fire set by her grandson three weeks earlier.
