Students at a middle school on Staten Island are turning their lunch tables into works of art with a message.

The tables were designed by children at I.S. 61 and nine other schools as part of the Learning through an Expanded Arts Program (LEAP) and will be put on display in parks near the school.

"It really is a symbol for us of student ideas and conversations in a cafeteria. That's where kids get together and talk about what's important to them," explained LEAP Public Art Program Director Alexandra Leff. "So for us, it was symbolic to use the table, and to then install it in the park."

"It just allows students the chance to work on material that's different than normal," said visiting artist Ken Millington. "It's not canvas. It's not paper. It's school property. Normally, they don't get to work on school property. But this is a chance for them to bring their ideas, their modes of self-expression and get it out in the public atmosphere."

On May 28th, all the artwork will be on display in Union Square.
