Trade Center Attack Causes Postponement Of City Primary

By: NY1 News

The New York City primary scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed due to the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center.

Polls opened at 6 a.m. Tuesday as scheduled, but a judge allowed them to close after the Twin Towers were hit by hijacked planes and destroyed.

Following the attack, all federal offices were closed and the city was placed on terrorist alert.

There is no official word on when the primary might take place.

However, an election official said that one option the city will consider is rescheduling the primary for September 25, the previously-scheduled date for any necessary runoffs.

Under that scenario, any necessary runoffs would have to be rescheduled for a later date.
